Imagine you're walking the old battlefields of Peleliu or Belleau Wood after a heavy rain, and out of the corner of your eye you spot a shimmer of brass...
The handle
A custom brass patinaed finish.
Gouged, ground, sculpted & treated with a brass patina chemical treatment by Greg Medford, each knife carries a slightly different handle finish.
The knife
A 100-year-old treatment.
We took our signature Knuckle Knife and gave it a 100-year-old treatment with originally perfect brass handles.
The knife features the 1918 engraving of the famous knife it calls out—but it is in no way a reproduction; it is a statement of its own.
We are known for some of our knife finishes, whether it be sculpting and color anodizing one of our Folding Pocket Knives, or transforming a perfect knife to look like it has been in a Fallout nuclear wasteland with our Fallout Finish. If you watch the video, you can see Greg reading from an old book he acquired 30 years ago on how to apply custom finishes to various metals.
Everything about finishes like these is approached like we do our grinding, machining, and assembly of Medford Knives: Tolerances, Accuracy, Consistency, Look & Feel are chased to perfection.
The Steel
Not only did we try to make the finish accurate to the time period, but the steel—1095 Cro Van—is from the Ka-Bar Knife Company and is the type of steel used in WWII knives, etc.
Why? Well, when you meet Greg Medford, not only is he clearly well indoctrinated in U.S. history through his background as a U.S. Marine and entrepreneur—even when snacking on a brisket lunch with him at a BBQ joint, it would not be out of character for you to hear him quote or tell a story about General Washington, techniques or strategies used to win famous historical battles, or the flight physics of airplane dogfighting.
Greg used 1095 Cro Van because he wanted to use steel from his good friends at the Ka-Bar Knife Company. Sure, he could have made it out of MagnaCut—but if you ask Greg, he did not even consider it. It is about the project for Greg, and you can see his passion in the video while he was making the knife for you.
