The San
Story
The Medford San is a fixed blade built around one specific idea: that the most enduring bushcraft knowledge on earth came from people who had nothing but what they carried. The San people of Southern Africa have been tracking, hunting, and surviving in some of the world's harshest terrain for tens of thousands of years — without coatings, without electronics, without complexity. The knife Greg Medford named after them reflects that philosophy directly.
The blade is CPM 3V — a steel chosen for toughness over corrosion resistance, for field use over display cases. The finish is tumbled and left uncoated, which isn't just an aesthetic choice: an uncoated spine works with a ferro rod. A fire divot is machined into the handle for bow-drill ignition. The G10 scales fill the hand without unnecessary bulk. This is a knife designed to be used in the field and pushed hard — the PRO Series DNA is present in every design decision, scaled down to a blade length that works on a belt in dense terrain as well as it works on an open ridgeline.

History
The San was introduced as part of Medford Knife & Tool's PRO Series fixed blade lineup, positioned alongside models like the EOD and the Field Master as purpose-built hard use tools rather than collector pieces. It shipped in multiple handle color configurations — Black G10, OD Green G10, and Coyote G10 — with sheath options including both American-made top grain leather (traditional drop-style, stamped with the MKT logo) and Kydex. Blade steel is CPM 3V throughout the lineup, tumbled and left uncoated. Specifications: 4.0 inch blade (PRO Series), 8.7 inch OAL, .150 inch blade thickness. The San appeared in later-era Medford fixed blade catalogs alongside expanded PRO Series offerings and was sold through major retailers including BladeHQ, Smoky Mountain Knife Works, and direct through medfordknife.com. The model has since been retired from the active lineup.
